Steampunk! the sculpture of Futurism.

Futurism, Italian Futurismo, Russian Futurizm, was an early 20th-century artistic movement centered in Italy that emphasized the dynamism, speed, energy, and power of the machine and the vitality, change, and restlessness of modern life.
It was during the second decade of the 20th century, that the movement’s influence radiated outward across most of Europe, most significantly to the Russian avant-garde. The most significant results of the movement were in the visual arts and poetry.

Filippo Tommaso Emilio Marinetti (22 December 1876 – 2 December 1944) was an Italian poet and editor, the founder of the Futurist movement. Marinetti is widely known as the author of the Futurist Manifesto, which he wrote in 1908. It was published on the front page of the most prestigious French daily, Le Figaro, on 20 February 1909.

The Futurist style in its regard to machinery, and the quick-pace of the modern lifestyle is very gritty yet solid. Although seemingly sloppy, its very conscious as to its purpose and meaning.

This is where I get to steampunking!!!

Steampunk (or the act of steampunking) is taking an everyday object, and transforming them into old machinery with strict regards to machinery and the grittyness of modern day life (much like futurism).

here are some photos to explain.

a book all about steampunk

steampunked USB stick

designs for a steampunked ipod

steampunked guitar (my favorite)

steampunked playstation 3

and this mind-blowingly awesome computer set up

steampunk (to me) would be the sculpture aspect of futurism. The high regard for machinery (as i stated before) infused with 20th century objects makes a tangible form of futurism. Not to mention its really cool looking.

I myself have steampunked, for my mixed media class I created a steampunk book, and also recreated a machinist/scientists lab table, the following images are all my own, and are of my creation.
